Anthropic has reshaped its top Claude subscriptions, and the new Claude Ultra plan is the headline change. The $200-a-month tier, which used to be sold as the bigger of two Max options, now has its own name and no five-hour usage limit for verified accounts. Max stays at $100 a month with five times the usage of Pro.
The change went live on October 30, 2026, through updated help center articles and a refreshed pricing page. If you lean on Claude all day for writing, research or coding, this is the most practical plan news in months.
What the Claude Ultra Plan Includes
Ultra gives you 10 times the Pro plan’s usage every week. The big shift is that verified Ultra accounts no longer hit a rolling five-hour cap, so you can work at your own pace until your weekly allowance runs out.
Here is what Anthropic lists for the plan:
- 10x Pro usage every week, measured across all models
- No five-hour limit once your account is verified
- A separate weekly limit for Fable
- Priority access to new models, features and products
- Claude Code included in the same subscription
- Monthly Claude API credits, listed at $200 a month on the pricing page
Ultra is sold as a monthly subscription only, at $200 per month on the web. Anthropic notes that mobile app pricing can differ by platform.
How Max and Ultra Now Compare
The cleanest way to see the change is side by side. Max keeps both a five-hour limit and a weekly limit, while Ultra drops the short window for verified users.
| Plan | Monthly price | Usage vs. Pro | Five-hour limit | Monthly API credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | $20 ($17 billed yearly) | Baseline | Yes | Not listed |
| Max | $100 | 5x every 5 hours and every week | Yes | $100 |
| Ultra | $200 | 10x every week | No, for verified accounts | $200 |
Notice the math. Each paid tier works out to about $20 for each “Pro-week” of usage, so the extra $100 for Ultra mostly buys freedom from the five-hour window and a bigger API credit.
Weekly limits still apply
Removing the five-hour cap does not mean unlimited use. Ultra still has a weekly limit across all models, plus a separate weekly cap on Fable, and Anthropic says it may add other limits to manage capacity.
How Verification Works on Ultra
To fight fraud and abuse, Anthropic verifies Ultra accounts automatically. It looks at signals like your account history and payment history, and you don’t need to file anything.
Until that happens, a temporary limit applies to newer accounts. Anthropic says verifying your phone number at checkout is a separate step and does not lift this limit on its own.
How to check your status
Open Settings and then Usage in Claude. If you don’t see a “Current session” bar, your account is already verified and the five-hour limit is gone.
Switching Between Claude Plans
Moving from Max to Ultra is charged on a prorated basis for the rest of your billing cycle. If you have already claimed monthly API credits, you get prorated credits right away and the higher amount every cycle after that.
If you are on an annual Pro plan and your remaining balance is worth more than the Ultra price, Anthropic adds a credit to your account. Your billing address has to match your old subscription for that credit to apply.
What This Means for You
The right plan depends on how you actually use Claude. A quick way to decide:
- Light daily use: Pro is still the value pick, and our guide on using Claude free covers the no-cost route.
- Steady work with breaks: Max gives you 5x Pro and keeps costs at $100 a month.
- Long, nonstop sessions: Ultra is built for people who keep hitting the five-hour wall, especially heavy Claude coding work in Claude Code.
- Building apps too: the $200 in monthly API credits on Ultra can offset some of your developer costs.

Conclusion
Anthropic has split its premium Claude subscriptions into two clearly named tiers. Max remains the $100 middle option with both five-hour and weekly limits, while Ultra costs $200 and lifts the five-hour cap for verified accounts. Weekly limits still apply on both, so the real win for Ultra users is fewer interruptions in the middle of long work sessions. If that five-hour wall has been slowing you down, Ultra is now the plan aimed squarely at you.
