Apple has made it official: Apple Intelligence is coming to China with iOS 27.3. In a press release on its Chinese newsroom, the company said testing of the first features begins on November 4 in the latest iOS developer beta, with a public release for iPhone users in China planned for December.
This is the confirmation many people were waiting for. Earlier reports pointed to a December launch, but until now Apple had not put a date or a feature list on the record.
What Apple Intelligence in China Will Include
The first wave covers many of the tools people outside China have used since 2024. Apple says the features run on its own generative models, and it has also partnered with Alibaba to bring the Qwen chatbot into parts of the experience.
Here is what Apple lists for the initial rollout:
- Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime and the Phone app, plus in-person translation through supported AirPods
- Writing Tools for rewriting, proofreading and summarizing text
- Visual Intelligence for learning more about things around you
- Clean Up in Photos to remove distracting objects
- Genmoji for creating custom emoji
- Natural-language search in the Photos app
- Priority messages at the top of the Mail inbox
- Type to Siri, with better handling of stumbles and follow-up questions
Where Qwen Fits In
Alibaba’s Qwen plays a role similar to the one ChatGPT plays on iPhones elsewhere. Apple says users in China can tap Qwen through Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence, including for text and image understanding.
That means you could ask questions about a photo or a document, such as a PDF or a slide deck. To use it, people sign in with a Qwen account or with Sign in with Apple.
The Big Limits on the China Launch
This is not the full Apple Intelligence package. Apple says the update does not include Siri AI or the other next-generation features it announced at WWDC 2026, and reports also note that Image Playground is left out.
The rollout is also iPhone-only for now. Apple says support on other platforms, like iPad and Mac, will arrive only after it gets the necessary approvals.

Why the Apple Intelligence China Launch Took So Long
China is one of Apple’s most important iPhone markets, yet its AI features have been missing there for about two years. Apple needed sign-off from Chinese regulators before it could switch the tools on, and it teamed up with Alibaba for the chatbot side.
The approval process dragged on through several delays. Reports in July said Apple Intelligence had cleared a key regulatory step, and our earlier coverage of the December launch plan described the limits that Apple has now confirmed.
Apple also took the unusual step of naming a beta date in a press release. The company normally keeps its developer beta schedule quiet, so the November 4 date shows how much weight it puts on this launch.
What This Means for You
If you live in the US, nothing changes on your iPhone. Still, the move matters for anyone following how Apple’s AI plans play out in one of its biggest iPhone markets.
- If you are a developer in China, you can start testing the features in the developer beta from November 4.
- If you own an older iPhone, such as an iPhone 15 or 14, you will not get these tools; you need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer.
- If you travel or work across the US and China, set Siri and your device to English or Simplified Chinese to get the features once they ship.
- If you want the smarter Siri, you will have to wait longer in China, since Siri AI is not part of this release.
For context, Apple just widened Siri AI languages in iOS 27.2. You can also compare how chat assistants stack up in our chatbot comparison guide, or catch up on more stories in our AI news hub.

Conclusion
After years of waiting and regulatory back-and-forth, Apple has finally set a date for Apple Intelligence in China. Testing starts November 4, and iPhone owners there should see the first features in December with iOS 27.3. The launch is limited, with no Siri AI and no support beyond the iPhone yet. Alibaba’s Qwen will fill the chatbot role that ChatGPT plays elsewhere. It is a meaningful first step, but the full Apple Intelligence experience in China is still a work in progress.
