Apple Opens Siri AI to Every App Developer With New App Skills

Apple is opening Siri AI to all app developers for the first time, starting with the iOS 27.3 developer betas released on November 3. A new Developer Preview lets any app plug its content and actions into Siri AI, and new app skills let developers teach Siri how to chain several steps into one request.

What Apple Announced for Siri AI Developers

Until now, Siri AI could only work with third-party apps through a smaller set of supported schemas. That limited what you could ask Siri to do inside apps that did not fit those predefined categories.

With the new preview, any app can expose its actions to Siri AI using App Intents, the framework developers already use for Siri and Shortcuts. Apple says this lets apps tap Siri AI’s newer abilities, including personal context, onscreen awareness and natural language understanding.

The preview is available in the iOS 27.3, iPadOS 27.3, macOS 27.3 and visionOS 27.3 betas. Apple says it will ship to customers in a few months, with App Store submissions opening in the spring.

How Siri AI App Skills Work

App skills are the bigger change. They let a developer describe how Siri should combine several app actions to handle a complex request, instead of handling one simple command at a time.

Apple’s developer documentation gives an example: you could ask Siri to send your favorite sneakers to your partner through a messaging app. Siri finds the sneakers you saved, works out who your partner is from Contacts, and sends the details in the app you named.

Less need to name the app

Siri AI also gets better at guessing which app you mean. If a ride-sharing app has an active Live Activity on your screen, for instance, a request to change the ride address goes to that app without you naming it.

On top of that, Siri AI can now surface any item in the Spotlight semantic index, not only the ones that fit an existing schema. That should make it easier to find app content just by describing it.

New Siri Abilities in Apple’s Own Apps

Apple is already using the same foundation across its own apps. The iOS 27.3 beta adds new Siri AI actions in Calendar, Files, Finder, Journal, Mail, Maps, Messages, Music, Notes, Photos, Preview, Reminders, Safari, Shortcuts and Weather.

AppExamples of new Siri AI actions in the beta
MessagesSchedule texts for later, edit or unsend messages, add emoji reactions
MusicCreate a playlist from a description and save it to your library
PhotosFavorite, rotate and edit photos, rename people and pets
FilesCreate, rename, sort and trash files and folders
SafariMake tab groups, sort tabs, clear history
JournalCreate text or audio entries for the first time

Apple’s own examples include finding a coffee shop you visited last week or archiving files you have not opened in over a year. Engineers will host Apple Intelligence Group Labs on November 4 and 5 to answer developer questions.

Limits and Fine Print

There are a few catches worth knowing before you get excited:

  • Siri AI is still unavailable in the EU on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS, and Apple says it is working with regulators on a path forward.
  • It requires an Apple Intelligence device set to a supported language: English, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese or Spanish for now, with more languages coming.
  • Some server-based features, including Siri AI, have daily usage limits, and Apple says expanded access will cost a fee in the future.
  • Apple says it will share terms and usage policies for Siri AI app experiences later.

What This Means for You

If you use an iPhone, this is the step that could make Siri AI useful across the apps you actually rely on, not just Apple’s. Once developers ship their integrations, you may be able to check a delivery, book a table or place an order with one spoken request.

Developers should start testing now, since the App Store opens to these features in the spring. If you build apps, our roundup of AI developer tools can help you prototype faster.

This also fits a bigger push toward assistants that act on your behalf, much like the AI agents trend in business software. Recent Apple moves, such as China AI launch and the cost pressure covered in our Siri AI margins story, show how much Apple is betting on Siri.

Our takeaway: a smarter Siri only matters if it works with your favorite apps, and this preview is the first real step toward that.

Conclusion

Apple’s new Developer Preview opens Siri AI to any app through App Intents and adds app skills for multi-step requests. Apple’s own apps already show what is possible, from scheduling messages to managing files by voice. The features are in beta now, reach customers in a few months, and open to App Store submissions in the spring. How useful Siri AI becomes will depend on how many developers build for it, and on the usage limits and fees Apple has yet to fully explain.
