Yelp rolled out a big batch of new AI features on Tuesday, led by Check for Me, an AI phone agent that calls a restaurant for you and texts back the current wait time. The fall release also brings OpenTable booking inside Yelp Assistant, scheduled reminders and new lists. Business owners get a paid AI tool that replies to and qualifies leads.
How Yelp’s Check for Me AI Agent Works
Yelp detailed the update in a post on its official blog. The idea is simple. Instead of calling a busy restaurant and waiting on hold, you tap a button and let an AI voice agent make the call.
- Open an eligible restaurant’s page in the Yelp app and tap “Check wait time now.”
- Enter your party size and your phone number.
- The AI agent calls the restaurant on your behalf.
- Within minutes, you get a text with the latest wait time.
There is a catch on timing. Yelp says Check for Me is rolling out over the coming months in the U.S. on iOS, on restaurant pages and in Yelp Assistant, and only where walk-ins are possible.
Part of a wider trend
Yelp is not alone here. Several personal assistants, including Meta’s Muse, have recently started placing calls to businesses for things like support and bookings. Yelp already offered a voice tool that answers phones for restaurants, so one day your AI agent may simply be talking to the restaurant’s AI agent.
The Other New Yelp AI Features for Diners
Yelp says the fall release includes more than 30 new features, updates and integrations. The headline changes for everyday users center on Yelp Assistant, the AI chatbot it introduced this spring.
| Feature | What it does | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| Check for Me | AI agent calls a restaurant and texts you the wait time | Coming months, U.S., iOS |
| OpenTable in Yelp Assistant | Book tables at OpenTable restaurants inside the chat | iOS |
| Keep Me Posted | Scheduled reminders with fresh suggestions | Now |
| Chat history | Reopen past Yelp Assistant chats | Past 30 days now, full history soon |
| My Lists | “Been Here” and “Want to Go” lists you can rank and share | iOS and Android |
| Smart Lead Reply | AI that answers and qualifies business leads | Next month, $30 per month |
Smarter, more personal answers
Yelp Assistant will now use your Yelp activity, such as past chats and reviews, to suggest follow-up prompts. If you asked about vegetarian food and reviewed dog-friendly cafes, it might suggest vegetarian spots that welcome dogs. It also factors in real-time weather, so it may steer you away from a patio-only place when rain is coming.
You can also join the Yelp Waitlist straight from the chat at eligible restaurants. Yelp says that through its own tools plus OpenTable, DoorDash and Grubhub, the assistant now covers booking and ordering at more than half a million restaurants.
Lists and reminders
The Keep Me Posted feature lets you ask for things like date night ideas every Wednesday. The new My Lists tab lets you filter, reorder and add notes to saved places, then share them by text or social apps. Starting next month, Yelp plans weekly personalized picks based on the places you rank.
New AI Tools for Local Businesses
The release is not only for diners. Service businesses get Smart Lead Reply, an agent-style tool that jumps in when someone submits a quote request.
- It answers customer questions using info already on the business’s Yelp page.
- It gathers project details and qualifies the lead.
- Owners can set services, pricing, promos and questions to ask.
- Once a lead is qualified, it shares a scheduling link so the customer can book.
Smart Lead Reply costs $30 per month for eligible categories such as movers, roofers, plumbers and cleaners. Yelp also added booking links with ServiceTitan and Housecall Pro and lead tools with Jobber and Workiz. Customers can now request quotes for up to five projects in a single conversation.
Our take: the most useful AI agents are the boring ones. Skipping a phone call to ask about a wait time is a small win you will feel every weekend.
What This Means for You
If you use Yelp to pick where to eat, these updates could save you real time. A few tips as the features arrive:
- Check your app version. Check for Me starts on iOS in the U.S., so Android users will need to wait.
- Mind your phone number. The feature texts results to the number you enter, so use one you check often.
- Try reminders for planning. Weekly suggestion prompts are a low-effort way to find new spots.
- Business owners should test before paying. Review how Smart Lead Reply answers questions before letting it talk to every customer.

Conclusion
Yelp’s fall release puts AI agents to work on small but annoying tasks, starting with Check for Me, which calls restaurants to get live wait times and texts you the answer. Yelp Assistant also gains OpenTable booking, reminders, chat history and more personal suggestions. Businesses get Smart Lead Reply for $30 a month to answer and qualify leads automatically. Some pieces, including Check for Me, will take months to reach everyone. Still, it is a clear sign that AI calling on your behalf is quickly becoming a normal app feature.
