Black Forest Labs Opens FLUX 3 Image Klein, a Small Image Model for 8 GB GPUs

Black Forest Labs has released the open weights for FLUX 3 Image Klein, a 5.6-billion-parameter AI image model you can run on your own computer. The company says it can create images, edit them, and blend up to ten reference pictures, all on a graphics card with as little as 8 GB of memory. Small businesses can also use it commercially for free, which makes it one of the more practical open image models to arrive this year.

What FLUX 3 Image Klein Can Do

Klein is a smaller sibling of the full FLUX 3 Image model. Even so, it keeps most of the headline features in a single model.

  • Text-to-image generation from a written description
  • Editing an existing picture with plain instructions
  • Combining up to ten reference images into one result
  • Bounding boxes, so you can say exactly where an object should appear
  • Native output up to 4K resolution

The bounding box feature is the most interesting for designers. Instead of hoping the model places a logo or product in the right spot, you draw a box and tell it what goes there.

Several Versions for Different Jobs

The release comes in a few flavors. A base checkpoint runs 50 steps and is meant for fine-tuning, while a distilled checkpoint needs only 16 steps and is built for speed.

There are also compressed FP8, NVFP4, and INT8 builds that cut memory needs. The INT8 version is the one that lets the model fit on an 8 GB consumer card.

How Fast Klein Runs on Your Own GPU

Black Forest Labs shared its own speed tests for the distilled model making a one-megapixel image, roughly 1,024 by 1,024 pixels. On an RTX 4070 it takes under 9 seconds, while a high-end RTX 5090 does it in about 4 seconds.

HardwareBuildTime for a 1MP image
RTX 4070 (consumer)INT8Under 9 seconds
RTX 5090 (consumer)INT8About 4 seconds
H100 (data center)StandardAbout 2 seconds
GB300 (data center)NVFP4Under 0.6 seconds

Memory is the main limit at home. The BF16 weights need about 11.2 GB and the FP8 build about 5.6 GB, so bigger images and 4K work will run slower on a mid-range card.

Quality Claims to Keep in Perspective

The company says Klein earns the highest preference ratings of any open image model in its internal tests. It also claims Klein beats the closed Ideogram V4.5 and its own older FLUX.2 pro model.

These are company-run tests, and they did not include the newest closed models from OpenAI or Google. Treat them as a starting point, not a final ranking.

FLUX 3 Image Klein License and Pricing

The weights ship under the FLUX Kommunity License. Individuals and businesses earning under $5 million a year can use Klein commercially without paying a license fee.

Larger companies need a separate deal to host it themselves, or they can use the paid API. That API starts at about $0.009 per image at 1K resolution.

The model also plugs into popular tools from day one, including ComfyUI, Hugging Face Diffusers, and Ostris AI Toolkit for training custom styles. Black Forest Labs says an outside partner, Cinder, ran safety tests on both checkpoints before release.

What This Means for You

If you make images for a small business, Klein is worth a look. You get a capable model you can run privately, train on your own products, and use commercially without a monthly bill.

  1. Check your GPU first, since 8 GB is the floor and more memory gives you more headroom.
  2. Start with the distilled version for speed, and switch to the base version only if you plan to fine-tune.
  3. Use reference images and bounding boxes to keep products and layouts consistent.
  4. Confirm your company’s revenue before relying on the free commercial license.

Conclusion

FLUX 3 Image Klein packs text-to-image, editing, and multi-reference generation into a 5.6-billion-parameter model that runs on an 8 GB graphics card. Its free commercial license for businesses under $5 million a year makes it unusually friendly for freelancers and small teams. Speeds are reasonable at 1K resolution but slow down quickly at larger sizes on consumer hardware. The quality claims come from the company’s own tests, so try it on your own work before switching tools. For anyone who wants private, customizable image generation, it is one of the strongest open options right now.
